
Panther Swimmers Drop Meet to Cyclones

Iowa - Sophomore Abby Girard (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Cedar Falls) collected the lone win for the Panthers Saturday as UNI lost to in-state rival, Iowa State, 180-57.The lone victory came in the 200-yard freestyle event, in what proved to be the closest race of the meet. Girard finished in the time of 1:57.40, just six one-hundredths of a second in front of a second-place Cyclone racer.
Along with the lone win, Girard also picked up a second-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke event, finishing with a time of 1:00.21. Panther teammate Abby Moes (Sioux City, Iowa/East) finished fourth in the race as well.
Freshman Josie Itzen (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Cedar Falls) picked up a pair of second-place finishes for the Panthers. Itzen raced her way to a 2:13.69 in the 200-yard IM, and finished just a second behind a Cyclone racer in the 100-yard freestyle event, clocking a 55.27.
A pair of Panthers finished together in the 50-yard freestyle, teammates Alexa Armstrong (Dubuque, Iowa/Hempstead) and Maggie Rickert (Hudson, Iowa/Hudson) shared a 26.07 third-place dead-heat finish.
Rickert and Itzen were both also pieces of the 200-yard freestyle relay squad which picked up a second-place finish. Along with teammates Jamie Keefer (Spencer, Iowa/Spencer) and Maegan Miller (Olathe, Kan./East) the team clocked a 1:42.32.
The Panthers will now have a month before they take to the pool again. The next meet is scheduled for Jan. 3, 2008 as the Panthers travel to Boca Raton, Florida to face-off against Florida Atlantic and Clemson. The times of both meets haven't been decided as of yet.
