
Panthers Stay Hot With 3-0 Sweep of Evansville

EVANSVILLE, Ind. - The University of Northern Iowa women's volleyball squad won its ninth straight match with a 3-0 sweep of Evansville on Friday night. The Panthers won with game scores of 30-18, 30-22 and 30-20.
The Panthers cruised to the victory behind the efforts of Ashten Stelken (14 kills), Amy Sampson (12 kills), Kristin Belzung (39 assists), Brittany Bakker (12 digs).
In the first game, UNI and Evansville were deadlocked at 8-8 before the Panthers went on a 9-1 run to take a 17-9 lead. The Panthers continued to extend the lead that would eventually end up at 28-15. UNI closed out the first game at 30-18.
Game two saw UNI jump to an 8-3 lead. Evansville would close the gap to 13-10, but the Panthers were able to keep the Purple Aces at bay. The Panthers then extended the lead back to eight and did not look back in taking the second game, 30-22.
UNI closed out the match in game three on the strength of a 4-0 start. The Purple Aces tried to rally and trimmed the Panthers' advantage to 6-4, but UNI just turned up the heat and scored 12 straight points to put the match out of reach at 18-4. The Purple Aces closed to within seven points at 27-20, but could get no closer and the Panthers finished off the home squad, 30-20.
UNI improved to 18-9 overall and 12-3 in the Missouri Valley Conference, whlie Evansville dropped to 12-14 overall and 5-10 in the MVC.
