Milwaukee, Wis. - Sophomore center Jordan Eglseder had his second career double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds to lead the University of Northern Iowa men's basketball team to a 73-66 win over UW-Milwaukee this afternoon at U.S. Cellular Arena.
Eglseder connected on 9-of-15 shots from the field, and also had two assists and three blocks. Senior point guard Jared Josten had 16 points, 14 of them coming in the second half, and senior center Eric Coleman came off the bench for his third double-double in four games this season - 12 points and 11 rebounds. UWM was led by Torre Johnson, who had a career-high 29 points.
UW-Milwaukee jumped out to a 14-11 lead midway through the first half, but UNI tied the score on a three-pointer from freshman guard Jon Montgomery. That was the start of a 17-7 run by UNI that saw it go up 28-21, with Eglseder, Coleman and Kerwin Dunham combining for 12 of the 17 points during that stretch. UWM battled back to pull within two at the break, 35-33, as Johnson hit a three-pointer from the right wing as the first half horn sounded.
Josten scored seven of UNI's first nine points in the second half, as UNI built its lead to nine (46-37). Johnson, however, almost single-handedly kept UWM in the game. He scored 17 of his team's first 21 points, pulling his team to within two, 56-54, after a conventional three-point play with eight minutes to go. UWM pulled even at 58-all one minute later, but UNI scored six straight points, including putbacks of UNI misses by both Travis Brown and Eglseder. UWM didn't get closer than four points the rest of the way, as UNI hit 5-of-7 free throws down the stretch to earn the victory.
UNI shot 49 percent from the field for the game, while holding UWM to 35 percent shooting. UNI also held a commanding lead in rebounding, 44-32.
UNI is now 4-0 on the season, the best start for a Panthers team since the 1999-2000 squad started 6-0. UW-Milwaukee fell to 2-1. UNI's next game is this Friday, Nov. 23, when it travels to face South Dakota State.
