GREELEY, Colo. - The University of Northern Iowa wrestling team captured its first conference dual victory in 29 years with a 27-18 triumph over the University of Northern Colorado on Friday night in the Butler-Hancock Sports Pavilion. UNI won six of the 10 matches in the dual.
UNI won its first Western Wrestling Conference match on Friday to move to 2-7 overall and 1-0 in the WWC. It was the UNI's first conference victory since the close of the 1977-78 season when the Panthers scored a 24-20 win over Augustana (S.D.) in North Central Conference action.
UNI head coach Brad Penrith was happy to get the win but knows the Panthers need to keep improving.
"Our core group wrestled well but we still had a couple of lackadaisical efforts," Penrith said. "Some of the guys just didn't get a good warm-up in at 125, 174 and 184. They just looked sluggish. I don't know if it was the altitude or what. But it is a road win and a conference win, now we have to concentrate on performing well at Wyoming."
UNI trailed 15-3 after the first four matches in the dual but rallied with four straight wins at 149, 157, 165 and 174 pounds. Charlie Ettelson (Hudson, Iowa) got the Panthers going with a 3-1 win at 149 pounds. Moza Fay (Anamosa, Iowa) kicked it in to a higher gear at 157 pounds with a fall over Luke Salazar at the 4:51 mark of their match. Nick Baima (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) dominated Devan Lewis at 165 pounds with a technical fall, 20-5. Alex Dolly (Mishawaka, Ind.) finished the run with a 12-3 major decision over UNC's Chase Walker at 174 pounds.
After Danny Dunning (Waterloo, Iowa) dropped an 8-3 decision at 184 pounds, Andrew Anderson (Sioux City, Iowa) completed the dual with a forfeit win at 197 pounds.
UNI will be in action Saturday at 8 p.m. (Central) against the Wyoming Cowboys in Laramie, Wyo., in another WWC match.
