PANTHERS FALL 2-1 TO INDIANA STATE IN CONFERENCE OPENER
Terre Haute, Ind. - The University of Northern Iowa women's soccer team fell 2-1 to Indiana State to open Missouri Valley Conference play. A Jackie Gielau goal in the 72nd minute was the lone goal for UNI.
The Sycamores scored in the second minute to open an early 1-0 lead. A goal in the 38th minute gave ISU a 2-0 advantage at intermission.
A corner kick to Jackie Gielau (Denver, Iowa/Denver) punched it through for the Panthers' lone goal of the night. The set play gave Gielau her second goal of the season and Daugherty her first assist of the year. But the Panthers failed to tie the game, give the Sycamores a 2-1 win.
"We had some good offensive opportunities this evening," head coach Kathy Kakoyianni-Bering said. "We learned tonight that if we get the ball to our forwards, good things will happen."
UNI fired 14 total shots and eight shots on goal, both season highs. Amy Seubert (Minnetonka, Minn./Minnetonka) and Jenna O'Hara (London, Ontario/A.B. Lucas) led the way for UNI with two shots-on-goal each.
The Panthers fall to 0-1-0 in MVC play, 0-11-0 on the season. Indiana State moves to 6-4-0 on the season, 1-0-0 in the Valley.
The Panthers continue conference play when Missouri State comes to the CVYSA Complex, Sunday. Game time is at 1 p.m.
