Panthers Open Season With 3-1 Win Over Albany

West Lafayette, Ind. - Junior outside hitter Laura Rowen (Hansell, Iowa) had 15 kills, and four other Panthers reached double-digits in that category, as the University of Northern Iowa volleyball team posted a 3-1 win over Albany this afternoon in the Purdue Mortar Board Classic.
Game scores were 27-30, 30-23, 30-19, and 30-21.
Trista Humpal (New Hampton, Iowa) and Danielle Brazda (Omaha, Neb.) each had 11 kills for the Panthers, while Amy Sampson (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) and Ashten Stelken (Manchester, Iowa) chipped in with 10 each. Senior libero Stephanie May (Dubuque, Iowa) led the Panthers with 15 digs, while Kristin Belzung (Ankeny, Iowa) had 50 assists and 11 digs. Brazda and Rowen each had seven blocks for the Panthers.
UNI struggled offensively in the first game, hitting -.028 as a team (11-12-36), and fell 30-27 to the Great Danes. But after that, it was all Panthers. UNI hit .395 in the second game, .293 in the third and .343 in the fourth to win in four.
The Panthers continue play in the tournament tonight, as they face 16th-ranked Purdue at 7:00 p.m.
