
Iowa State Claims 3-1 Win over UNI

Ames, Iowa - Outside hitter Laura Rowen had 20 kills, but it was not enough as the University of Northern Iowa volleyball team dropped a 3-1 decision to Iowa State tonight at Hilton Coliseum. Game scores were 30-19, 28-30, 30-23 and 30-23 in favor of the Cyclones.
Rowen hit .341 (20-5-44) for the match and added eight digs, three digs and three block assists. Setter Kristin Belzung had 41 assists, 14 digs and six blocks. Iowa State was led by Katie Jessen who had a match-high 22 kills.
Iowa State used a 7-1 run midway through the first game to open up a 22-14 lead and eventually post a 30-19 win. The Cyclones hit .351 (17-4-37) in the first game compared to .000 (10-10-38) for the Panthers. Laura Rowen had four of UNI's 10 kills in the first game.
The Panthers rallied late to pull out game two. Trailing 28-25, Rowen was the catalyst as UNI rattled off the final five points of the contest. Rowen started the rally with a kill, and after a Cyclone hitting error, Rowen served two straight service aces to give the Panthers a 29-28 lead. ISU's Nicole Lorenzen then hit the ball wide to give UNI the 30-28 win and even the match at one game apiece.
Iowa State jumped out to a quick 7-3 lead in the third game and the Panthers never got closer than three points the rest of the way. Leading 13-10, the Cyclones went on a 9-2 run to open a 22-12 advantage, eventually winning 30-23.
The Cyclones wrapped up the match in the fourth game. After UNI went on a 5-1 run to pull within 21-18, Iowa State responded with a 5-0 run of its own to pull ahead 26-18. The teams traded points the rest of the way with ISU winning, 30-23.
Iowa State hit .224 (63-26-185) on the evening, while UNI hit just .072 (52-39-181). The Cyclones also had won the battle of digs (77-58) and had more blocks (16.5-11.0)
With the victory, Iowa State improves to 4-0 on the season, while UNI falls to 2-2. UNI's is next in action this weekend (Sept. 1-2) at the Regency Bank Midtown Invitational in Atlanta, Ga.
