UNI Picks Up Pair of Dual Wins at Eastern Illinois

CHARLESTON, Ill. - The No. 25-ranked University of Northern Iowa wrestling team picked up a pair of victories over two NCAA West Regional opponents in a double dual Saturday at Eastern Illinois.
UNI (5-7-1) rolled to a 38-15 win over the host EIU Panthers. UNI also scored a narrow 23-19 victory over the University of Wyoming Cowboys.
UNI 38, EASTERN ILLINOIS 15
UNI overcame an early 15-5 deficit to storm past Eastern Illinois, 38-15.
UNI won seven of the 10 matches, including four pins and a forfeit.
Junior Nick Baima scored another dominating win at 165 pounds with a 23-6 technical fall over EIU's Tyler Brucker.
After Curt Zinnel suffered an injury default at 174 pounds, EIU's Greg Perz pinned UNI's De'Andre Nunn at 184 pounds and EIU's Terron Williams decisioned UNI's Jeff Knoll at 197 pounds, UNI trailed by the count of 12-5.
But UNI would not lose another match the visiting Panthers rolled off six straight victories to close out the win.
Junior Tyler Rhodes began the comeback with a pin at heavyweight and junior Seth Wright tallied a forfeit win at 125 pounds. UNI continued the rout with three straight pins from Chris Helgeson (133 lbs.), C.J. Ettelson (141 lbs.) and Justin Swafford (149 lbs.).
Senior Chris Bitetto finished off the dual with a 13-8 victory at 157 pounds over EIU's Thomas Johnson.
UNI 23, WYOMING 19
UNI captured six of the 10 matches contested against the Wyoming Cowboys and used a pin from C.J. Ettelson to nab a 23-19 dual win.
The Panthers started strong again with an 11-2 major decision from 165-pounder Nick Baima over UW's Gary Dack.
Sophomore Dan Dunning gave the Panthers an 8-6 lead with a 10-2 major decision at 184 pounds over the Cowboys' Preston Pavich.
However, Wyoming countered with two wins at 197 pounds and heavyweight to take a 15-8 dual lead with five matches remaining.
UNI responsed with three straight wins from Seth Wright (125 lbs.), Chris Helgeson (133 lbs.) and C.J. Ettelson (141 lbs.) to turn the deficit into a 20-15 advantage. Ettelson's victory came via fall at the 4:07 mark of the match and it was his second pin of the day.
Wyoming's Carter Downing cut the UNI lead to 20-19 with a 20-9 major decision at 149 pounds over UNI's Colby Goetsch.
But UNI redshirt freshman Moza Fay came through in the clutch with a 12-8 victory at 157 pounds over Wyoming's Dan Clum. Fay's decision gave UNI the 23-19 dual win.
The Panthers will be in action on Sunday at 2 p.m. against the Northern Illinois Huskies in DeKalb, Ill.
