Cedar Falls, Iowa - In its first game in the McLeod Center, the University of Northern Iowa men's basketball team posted a 69-58 win over UW-Milwaukee this afternoon.
Four UNI players reached double figures in scoring. Despite playing just 17 minutes, center Eric Coleman (Maplewood, Minn.) led the way with a game-high 15 points, connecting on 7-of-10 shots from the field. Point guard Brooks McKowen (Fairbank, Iowa) had a season-high 12 points and added eight assists, while Travis Brown (Richfield, Minn.) had 11 points and Jared Josten (Webster City, Iowa) had 10 points, five rebounds and three assists.
UW-Milwaukee scored the game's first basket, but that would be UWM's only lead, as Coleman scored three early hoops to put UNI up 10-4. A three-pointer by Allan Hanson pulled Milwaukee within 12-10 with 11:08 left in the first half, but UNI then went on a 10-2 run to go up 22-12 with 6:30 remaining. UNI held a 28-20 lead at halftime, holding UWM to just 30 percent shooting (8-for-26) in the opening 20 minutes.
A three by Paige Paulsen pulled UWM within 29-25 early in the second half, but that was as close as Milwaukee would get. Coleman, Josten and Grant Stout (New Sharon, Iowa) accounted for 14 of the team's next 17 points, as UNI went on a 17-2 run over a six minute period to extend its lead to 46-29 and effectively put the game away. UWM's 11-point deficit at the end of the game was the closest it got the rest of the way.
Stout had nine points, eight rebounds, three blocks and two steals, while freshmen Jordan Eglseder (Bellevue, Iowa) and Adam Koch (Ashwaubenon, Wis.) combined for nine points and 10 rebounds. Paulsen led UWM with 14 points. As a team, UNI shot 55 percent from the field, while holding UW-Milwaukee to just 38 percent shooting.
UNI improves to 3-1 on the season, while UW-Milwaukee falls to 1-4. UNI faces South Dakota State at 7:05 p.m. this Friday night (Nov. 24) in the McLeod Center.
