Cedar Falls, Iowa - Cedar Falls, Iowa - Eric Coleman (Maplewood, Minn.) and Grant Stout (New Sharon, Iowa) each posted double-doubles to lead the University of Northern Iowa men's basketball team to a thrilling 71-65 double-overtime win over Southern Illinois Monday night at the UNI-Dome.
Coleman posted a season-high 22 points and grabbed a career-best 15 rebounds, while Stout scored 20 points and grabbed 13 boards. The pair was a combined 10-for-19 from the field, and an impressive 20-for-24 at the foul line. Stout himself was a perfect 10-for-10 from the charity stripe, and 2-of-3 from three-point range -- including a three from the left wing that forced the second overtime.
Ben Jacobson (Sioux City, Iowa) scored 14 points, with his last points coming on a 10-footer with 32 seconds left in the second overtime that gave UNI the lead for good, 65-63. Southern Illinois turned the ball over on the ensuing possession, and the Panthers were able to hit all six of their free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.
In a defensive-minded first half, Southern Illinois jumped to 14-9 lead. But UNI responded with a 15-2 run over a five minute stretch to take a 24-16 advantage with just two minutes left in the half. SIU scored the final three points of the half, including a jumper in the lane from point guard Bryan Mullins at the horn, to pull within 24-19 at the break.
UNI held a slim advantage for much of the second half, but SIU would not go away. When Brooks McKowen (Fairbank, Iowa) hit one of two free throws, UNI extended its lead to six (48-42) with less than three minutes left in regulation. But SIU scored six straight points, the last two coming on a pair of Tony Young free throws with 31 seconds left, to pull the Salukis even at 48-all. Coleman's missed a shot at the buzzer that would have won the game for UNI.
Southern Illinois jumped to a 54-49 lead in the first overtime. John Little (Peoria, Ill.) missed a three-pointer that would have tied the game, Mullins missed the front end of a one-and-one opportunity. The Panthers again failed to score, but this time Young missed the front end of a one-and-one with 14 seconds left. The Panthers then ran a play for Stout, who nailed a trey from the left side of the court to tie the score at 56-all, and send the game into the second overtime.
Southern Illinois shot 44 percent from the field for the game, while UNI connected on just 37 percent of its shots. But the Salukis were just 5-for-11 at the free throw line, while the Panthers nailed 32-of-38 foul shots. In the two overtime periods, UNI was 16-for-18 at the line, while SIU was 1-of-5.
UNI improves to 16-3 overall, 6-2 in Missouri Valley Conference play, while Southern Illinois has its 11-game winning streak snapped and falls to 13-4 overall, 6-1 in the Valley. The Panthers host Drake on Saturday night (Jan. 21) at the UNI-Dome, with tipoff set for 7:05 p.m.
