Cedar Falls, Iowa - Laura Rowen (Hansell, Iowa) had a team-high 12 kills, but it was not enough as Iowa State defeated the University of Northern Iowa volleyball team, 3-0, tonight at a sold-out West Gymnasium. Game scores were 30-28, 30-24 and 30-16.
The capacity crowd of 2,052 -- for UNI's home opener -- saw the Panthers got off to a quick start, scoring the first five points of the match, two on kills by Danielle Brazda (Omaha, Neb.). But Iowa State rallied to tie the score at 10 and kept it close until UNI went on another run to open a 24-20 edge. However, the Cyclones went on a 7-1 run to gain the lead, 27-25, and were able to trade points the rest of the way and earn the game one win, 30-28.
Iowa State once again surged late to take game two and go up two games to none. The Cyclones used a 4-0 run to turn a 20-all tie into a 24-20 advantage, and were able to surge for the victory. Iowa State hit .302 (19-6-43) in the second game compared to .175 (15-8-40) for UNI. In the third game, Iowa State had a key 5-0 run that turned a 12-9 lead into 17-9, and the Panthers were never able to get closer than seven the rest of the way as ISU claimed the match.
Iowa State's Katie Jessen tied Rowen for match-high honors in kills with 12, and she also added 11 digs. UNI's Stephanie May (Dubuque, Iowa) had nine kills and eight digs. ISU hit .267 (46-18-105) as a team on the evening, while UNI hit .170 (45-26-112).
With the win, Iowa State improves to 6-1, while UNI falls to 4-2. UNI's next match is this Friday night, when they travel to face Wisconsin-Milwaukee in UWM's tournament.
