The University of Northern Iowa women's soccer team fell to the University of Iowa this evening at the Cedar Valley Soccer Complex 5-2. The Panthers had a 2-1 lead in the first period, but Iowa managed to score four unanswered goals.

"I am pleased with our performance. This is actually a really good game for us right before our first conference game," interim head coach Kathy Kakoyianni-Bering said. "Our speed of play was up, our aggressiveness was up and our drive to win the ball was up. We need to take this level of play into conference."

UNI and Iowa traded goals in the first 15 minutes of play. Jamie Maltman gave the Hawkeyes a 1-0 lead off an assist by Melisa Kaetterhenry at the 4:12 minute mark. The Panthers counterattacked and took a 2-1 lead off two consecutive goals. Freshman Holly Winter hit the back of the net as the ball skidded off of the Iowa goalie's gloves in the seventh minute, tallying her first collegiate goal.

Junior Aimee Rasmusson sunk a header off an Amy Seubert corner kick at 10:30, recording her first goal this season. Iowa then knotted the game five minutes later with an unassisted goal by Kaetterhenry. The Hawkeyes outscored UNI 3-0 in the second period as Sarah Stephenson and Abby Gierke both notched goals.

Many UNI players switched positions throughout the game, due to the injury toll the team has taken.

"They are starting to realize that in order for us to succeed they have to give 110 percent, no matter what position I put them in. Changing positions throughout the game has to occur until we have everyone back," Kakoyianni-Bering said. "Everyone is stepping up. Obviously, it's tough because you come in thinking you are the striker and then when I put you in as a stopper and you perform that really well ... that means you are just doing what you need to do for the team. Everyone is being unselfish like that. The team will succeed one way or another. Sunday a new season starts."

The Panthers (1-10) begin Missouri Valley Conference play Sunday at Drake at 1:00 p.m.
