PANTHERS POUND WISCONSIN-GB 8-1, IMPROVE TO 2-0
Minneapolis, MN--The University of Northern Iowa softball team earned its second win in as many days on Friday, stopping the Phoenix of Wisconsin-Green Bay in their tracks, and earning an 8-1 victory. Freshman Amanda Hess earned the win with a complete game in her collegiate debut.
The Panthers drew first blood in the top of the second when senior Melissa King plated Hess with an RBI triple to put the score at 1-0. The Cats added four more in the third when junior Uju Ibekwe stole home on a wild pitch, and senior Erin Strellner blasted UWGB pitcher Lisa Meissner's offering over the fence for a three-run home run. The four-run third inning gave UNI a cushy 5-0 lead.
The Phoenix avoided the shutout with a run in the fourth, but UNI's offense roared back to life in the sixth with three more runs. Strellner scored on a wild pitch and senior Tracy Davis lined a two-run single through the hole to score Stephanie Aguero and Lesley Salton. The Panthers stifled the Phoenix offense in the final frame to take home the 8-1 victory.
Strellner led the UNI offense for the second straight day after going 2-4 with a home run, two runs scored and three RBIs. Davis added two RBIs while Aguero finished 2-3 with a run scored.
Hess pitched a gem in her collegiate debut, going the distance in a five hit, nine strikeout performance, and earning the impressive 8-1 victory.
UNI boosts its record to 2-0 while Wisconsin-Green Bay falls to 0-3.
The Panthers continue the Metrodome Classic with two matchups on Saturday, the first against the hosts, Minnesota, at 3:00 p.m., and the second against Tulsa at 5:30 p.m.
