Panthers Go 1-1 on Saturday, Improve to 3-1

PANTHERS GO 1-1 ON SATURDAY, RAISE RECORD TO 3-1
Minneapolis, MN-- The University of Northern Iowa softball team fell to Minnesota and defeated Tulsa on Saturday, raising its record to 3-1. The Panthers fought a tough battle against Minnesota, but eventually lost 3-1. UNI toppled Tulsa 2-1 behind a magnificent eight-inning pitching performance from Amanda Hess to put its record at 3-1.
The Panthers began the day with a tough loss to the Golden Gophers of Minnesota. The Panthers scored their lone run on a valiant effort from sophomore Nikki Ferden. The left fielder smacked a double in the first inning, stole second, and eventually stole home for UNI's lone run of the game. The Golden Gophers added their own runs in the first, third and fourth for a tally of 3-1.
Ibekwe pitched a solid game, allowing three runs on four hits while striking out eight in six innings of work. The junior was stuck with the tough-luck loss, dropping her record to 1-1 on the season.
Freshman Jamie Kelling led the offense with two hits in three at-bats, Ferden scored the lone Panther run.
The second game of the day proved to be more positive for the Panthers. UNI took down a solid Tulsa team in eight innings to take the 2-1 win.
Tulsa broke a three-inning stalemate by posting a run in the fourth, but the Panthers tied the game in the seventh on an RBI double from senior Melissa King, forcing extra innings. UNI plated a run in the eighth on an RBI single by Tracy Davis, scoring Kelling, and putting the Panthers up 2-1. Hess shut out the Golden Hurricane offense to earn the 2-1 victory.
Davis led the offense with two hits and an RBI. King added an RBI from the DP spot.
Hess delivered an excellent performance in the circle, throwing eight innings of four-hit ball while striking out two to earn the win against a tough Tulsa team. The win gives Hess her second win in as many days.
Today's action moves the Panthers to 3-1, while Tulsa drops to 4-5 and Minnesota sits at 4-1.
UNI faces Western Illinois in its Metrodome Classic finale tomorrow at 11:30
