The University of Northern Iowa wrestling team could not contain the third-ranked Iowa State Cyclones tonight in Ames (IA). The Panthers fell 25-16 in Hilton Coliseum.

Senior 174-pounder Eric Hauan picked up his 100th win for the Panther, defeating Iowa State's Nick Passolano in the second dual of the night. Neither wrestler scored until the third period of that match, with Passolano choosing down and scoring a reversal at the beginning of the third. Hauan escaped and the Cyclone was called for stalling to force overtime. With 16 seconds remaining in the first overtime, Hauan got a takedown and a two-point near fall. Hauan's career record improves to 100-30, while on the season he is 22-3.

UNI's Nick Baima and Travis Paulson, two top 20 wrestles, squared off in the first dual of the night at 165. The scored was one-all with 1:12 left in the dual when Paulson injury defaulted. At 184 pounds, third-ranked Kurt Backes scored five points for the Cyclones, claiming a technical fall over UNI's Alex Dolly.

Senior Sean Stender then nabbed three points back for the Panthers in a 6-4 decision over Trevor Smith. The match was tied at three after Smith got a reversal at the start of the third period. Stender went on to escape and gain a takedown, though.

So after four matches the Panthers were dealing with a 12-5 advantage over Iowa State. The Cyclones battled back, though, with heavyweight Scott Coleman pinning Michael Shedek in 2:16 and 10th-ranked Grant Nakamura defeating junior Chris Helgeson 11-4. Freshman Panther Jeremy Meyer lost to Jesse Sundell at 133 and top-ranked Cyclone Nate Gallick stayed undefeated on the season, defeating C.J. Ettelson 13-2.

Senior Jeff Harrison picked up extra points for the Panthers at 149 pounds, posting a major decision over Jason Knipp. Harrison scored ten points in the third period, including riding time.

Chris Bitetto fell to sixth-ranked undefeated Trent Paulson in the final match at 157.

UNI continues its action on the road next weekend, traveling to Cleveland (OH) for the National Duals. It then hosts top-ranked Oklahoma State in the West Gym on Jan. 28.
