The UNI women's soccer team fell 6-2 to the University of Tulsa tonight at the Cedar Valley Soccer Complex. The Panthers scored a goal in each half.
The Panthers jumped on the board first when junior Shanon Dechant (Marion, Iowa) used her speed and nice footwork scoring a goal at the 4:55 mark. Dechant received the ball at midfield and sliced through the Golden Hurricane defense, finally faking out the keeper leaving a wide open net for her to score her first goal of the season.
Unfortunatley, Tulsa had an answer. The Golden Hurricane went on to score the next six goals to take the 6-1 lead. Tulsa led 4-1 at halftime, but the Panthers had the shot advantage 14-12.
In the 73rd minute junior Candice Divoky (Solon, Iowa) received a beautiful pass from junior teammate Kaitlin Stimpson (Shoreview, Minn.) to make the score 6-2. The goal was Divoky's second of the season, it was also Stimpson's second assist of the year.
Overall Tulsa nipped UNI in shots, leading 21-19 but the Panthers fired 14 on goal compared to the Golden Hurricane's 10. UNI was led offensively by Divoky who had five shots, sophomore Aimee Rasmusson's (Cedar Falls, Iowa) four shots, and Dechant who took three shots.
"We have a young team so they are going to bounce back, I have absolutely no doubt of that," UNI head coach Linda Whitehead said. "We just have to put this one away and look forward to our next game."
UNI falls to 0-7-2 on the season while Tulsa improves to 2-6-1. The Panthers are gearing up for their Missouri Valley Conference schedule, which begins at Evansville, Ind. on October 1, at 7:00 p.m. UNI will be back in action at home on Oct. 8, in a MVC match-up vs. Drury. That game will start at 6:00
