Cedar Falls, Iowa - Ben Jacobson (Sioux City, Iowa) scored 15 points, and three other players reached double figures in scoring, as the University of Northern Iowa defeated Wagner, 86-56, Tuesday night in the UNI-Dome.
The Panthers also set a UNI-Dome record by draining 13 three-pointers on the night. The previous Dome record was 12, set on several occasions, most recently Dec. 1 against Iowa State in a 99-82 UNI victory.
Eric Coleman (Maplewood, Minn.) and Erik Crawford (Oakdale, Minn.) each had 13 points for the Panthers, and Grant Stout (New Sharon, Iowa) added 12. Coleman led all players with eight rebounds. Sophomore point guard Brooks McKowen (Fairbank, Iowa) had six assists and no turnovers on the night, and as a team, UNI posted 21 assists to just nine turnovers.
The Panthers (6-2) jumped on the Seahawks (1-7) early, scoring the game's first eight points. UNI was hot from the field early, connecting on 8 of its first 12 shots from the field. Wagner was equally as cold, hitting on just two of its first 19 field goal attempts, and did not reach double-figures in scoring until 3:05 remained in the first half. UNI led 35-11 at that point and held a 40-20 edge at intermission.
Wagner scored the first five points of the second half to pull within 40-25, but that was as close as the Seahawks would get. The Panthers, who shot 57.7 percent from the field in the first half, were even better in the second, connecting on 60 percent of their field goal attempts. UNI led by as many as 34 late in the game (83-49).
UNI, which ranks second in the NCAA in field goal percentage (52.8 percent), connected on 58.8 percent of its shots on the evening (30-for-51). The Panthers also rank sixth in the NCAA in three-point field goal percentage (44.8 percent), and hit on 56.5 percent of their treys against the Seahawks (13-for-23).
A total of 13 players saw action for UNI, and 12 of them scored. Freshman guard Adam Viet (Ackley, Iowa) had a career-high eight points, including a pair of three-pointers. Wagner was led by Matt Vitale, who scored a game-high 19 points, including hitting 4-of-8 on three-pointers.
UNI's next game is this Thursday (Dec. 23), when it hosts the Longwood Lancers at the UNI-Dome. Tipoff is set for 7:05 p.m.
