Kansas City, Mo. - Frontcourt mates Eric Coleman (Maplewood, Minn.) and Grant Stout (New Sharon, Iowa) each posted double-doubles to lead the University of Northern Iowa men's basketball team to an 81-58 win over the University of Missouri-Kansas City Saturday night.
Coleman had 16 points and 10 rebounds for his third double-double of the year, while Stout had 12 points, 10 boards and a career-high six blocks, garnering his fourth double-double of the season. Erik Crawford (Oakdale, Minn.) added 12, as four Panthers reached double digits in scoring.
The Panthers broke the game open late in the first half, going on a 14-2 run to turn a 17-16 lead into a 31-18 advantage with 3:10 left in the opening stanza. Coleman had five points during that run, and Brooks McKowen (Fairbank, Iowa) and John Little (Peoria, Ill.) each hit key three-pointers. UNI led 38-26 at halftime.
Coleman's presence early in the second half - with two dunks and a layup over the first five minutes - helped UNI extend its lead to 53-34 with 15:28 left in the game. The Kangaroos got no closer than 15 points the rest of the way, and the Panthers led by as many as 26 late in the game.
The Panthers shot better than 50 percent from the field for the fifth time in six games, including a blistering 61.5 percent (16-for-26) in the second half. UNI connected on 50 percent of its three-pointers (9-of-18), and outrebounded UMKC 48-34 for the night. UNI's bench also was a key contributor to the win, as the Panthers got 21 points from its reserves.
UMKC was led by Mike English who came off the bench to score a game-high 18 points.
With the win, UNI improves to 4-2 on the season, while UMKC fell to 0-4. The Panthers' next game is Wed., Dec. 15, when UW-Green Bay comes to the UNI-Dome. Tipoff is set for 7:05 p.m.
