Dubbed “the fastest sprinter in Iowa” in his time, William Franklin “Red” Hamilton was the Iowa State Normal School’s first Olympic gold medalist, helping lead the United States to victory in the 1,600-meter relay at the 1908 games in London. The State Center, Iowa native also competed in the 100 and 200-meter dash at the Games of the IV Olympiad. In qualifying for the London Games, Hamilton won both individual races at the U.S. Olympic Trials.
Having "no record to distinguish him, in an athletic way from any other youthful aspirants," Hamilton tried out for the ISNS track team in 1903. By the time he left school in 1906, he had set every track record, including the 100, 220 and 440-yard dashes, as well as the broad jump, helping lead the Tudors to the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Association championship in his final collegiate season. Hamilton would also win the 100 and 220-yard sprints that season at the Big Nine meet. He also played football for Tudors as well during his time in Cedar Falls.
On the national stage, Hamilton won the 100-yard dash at the 1908 AAU National Championships, earning him a spot on the 1908 U.S. Olympic Team. He also set the 300-meter run world record during his career.
