Rarely does an athlete come along who excels at more than one sport at the collegiate level, but Kathy Schogren Fell is one of those special athletes.
Fell graduated from Benton Community High School in Van Horne, Iowa, in 1972. She was a four-year starter on both the UNI women's basketball and softball teams from 1972-1976. During her tenure on the softball team, she was part of a number of very successful teams in which she was the starting first baseman. In 1973-74, the softball team finished with a record of 15-3, placing third in the state. In 1974-75, the Panthers improved to 20-4. They finished first in the district, first in state and second in the College World Series. During her senior season, Fell and the Panthers finished at 23-3. This also came along with a first-place finish in the state as well as finishing in the top six in the World Series.
Fell's basketball career was also a very successful one as she started at forward all four years. During her freshman season, she made an immediate impact, leading the Panthers in scoring. During her sophomore season, the team finished 10-3 while Fell averaged just under nine points a game. Her high game came against Iowa Wesleyan where she scored 18 points. Fell's junior year saw her average 12.8 points. Her game-high came against Westmar when she finished with 24 points. During her senior season, the Panthers finished 16-3 overall. She ended the year averaging 14.7 points. Her high game came against Central Missouri when she scored 29 points. The Panthers were the IAIAW District II tournament champions, as well.
For her outstanding achievements in women's athletics, Fell received the Purple and Old Gold Award in 1976. She also received the Michel Award, a women's physical education department award. She was a member of Kappa Delta Pi, an education honor society, from 1974-76. Fell graduated in 1976 with a B.A. in physical education and health. She went on to Hampton-Dumont Community School District where she was the middle school and high school Physical Education Instructor from 1976-83. She also was the ninth grade girls basketball and varsity softball coach. She coached Hampton-Dumont to a 12th-place finish in the 1979 state softball Tournament.
