John Aldrich Sr.Â
Dr. Jitu D. Kothari Meritorious Service Award
John Aldrich Sr. credits his successes to the young men and women of whom he has had the privilege of teaching. Serving as athletic director, football coach and teacher from 1955-87, he is no stranger to hard work.
He was a 1944 graduate of the University of Rhode Island with a B.S. degree in physical education and agricultural chemistry, with advanced studies in health and recreation. He went on to gain his master's degree in physical education and health, with advanced studies in education and recreation, and continued with partial completion of his doctorate, all from Boston University between 1945-50.
After graduation, Aldrich did further study through California-Berkeley and Indiana, then participated in secondary school workshops at Iowa State Teachers College in 1955. While accumulating his many degrees, he also taught and coached at 10 different schools in a nine-year span. Prior to coming to Malcolm Price Laboratory School in 1955, he served as head coach at Bethel College in Tennessee from 1950-55.
While teaching at Price Lab, he started his successful coaching career in football. He accumulated a 120-49 won-lost record, earning him a selection in the Iowa High School Coaches Hall of Fame in 1979. He also coached baseball, as well as serving as Athletic Director. His other accomplishments include writing a book entitled "Single Wing Offense With the Spinning Fullback", which carries on the ideas and schemes of former UNI head football coach Clyde "Buck" Starbeck.
