Dr. Wanda Green
- Induction:
- 1990
When the subject turns to coaching and instruction at UNI, one name that stands out is Dr. Wanda Green, who was involved with UNI athletics for more than 20 years.
Green game to UNI as an instructor in 1967 and was named head women's basketball coach in 1968. She remained in that position until 1977, compiling a 76-58 record which included a fourth place finish in the 1973 AIAW Region 6 Tournament. Green also coached the women's junior varsity team, which went 54-18 during her tenure.
Basketball wasn't the only sport Green coached. She mentored the women's field hockey team from 1973 until the program was discontinued in 1982. From 1973-77, the Panthers were members of the United States Field Hockey Association and UNI sent at least one athlete representative to nationals each year and as many as seven one season. From 1977-82, UNI belonged to the AIAW College Division, and the Panthers qualified for regionals three of those years. Green's overall field hockey record was 62-87-11.
She held several jobs prior to joining UNI's faculty. She received her bachelor's degree in history with minors in social science and physical education from Northern Colorado in 1962. She taught P.E. and geography at Wheatland (Wyo.) High School immediately after graduation until 1965 and taught one year in Salida, Colo., as well. She then returned to Northern Colorado, earning her master's degree in physical education in 1967. She completed her doctorate in physical education and sport sociology from UNC in 1985.
Her association with athletics hasn't been limited to coaching. From 1968-78, she was selected to Midwest Field Hockey Teams competing at nationals, and in 1984 she received honorary membership in the Midwest Field Hockey Association. She also pitched fast pitch softball from 1965-77 in Colorado and was selected to all-state and all-regional teams in 1972, 1973 and 1974. She umpired softball and field hockey, and in 1973 she officiated the USFHA national tournament in Boston, Mass. In 1974 she umpired the AIAW National Softball Tournament in Omaha, Neb. She was president of the Northeast Iowa Board of Officials 10 years and was president of the NEI Field Hockey Club five years.
Green has been published on numerous occasions and was a member of the America Alliance for Physical Education, the National Education Association and the North America Society for the Sociology of Sport.Â
