
Carnes Wins Most Outstanding Athlete At MVC Championships

WICHITA STATE, Kan. – The University of Northern Iowa track and field program wrapped up competition today at the MVC Outdoor Track and Field Championships, with the men finishing in second overall and the women in fifth.
The men's team's second place finish is its highest since 2009 when they won the meet. The Panthers scored 166 points with Wichita State taking the team titles with 181.50. The meet was highlighted by senior Brandon Carnes making history once against for UNI and the Missouri Valley Conference.
Carnes won his 15th and 16th MVC titles today, making him undefeated at the MVC indoor and outdoor championships. He is a four-time indoor 60 and 200 meter dash winner and completed his undefeated Valley meet career with his fourth 100 and 200 meter dash titles, becoming the first athlete in MVC history to accomplish the feat.
He got the day started in the 100 meter dash, running a wind-aided personal-best of 9.97 that puts him at No. 2 in the country heading into the weekend, giving him the MVC Most Outstanding Male Track Athlete award. He followed it up in the 200 meter dash, posting a time of 20.42. The Bradenton, Fla., native is one of the first athletes in NCAA Division I track and field to win 16 conference titles in a career.
In the 110 meter hurdles, the Panthers racked in 13 points on the men's side with Jon Rus earning UNI's highest finish in fourth, running the 17th fastest time in the NCAA West region. He ran a wind-aided personal-best time of 13.92 with Cole Phillips (14.19), Daurice Fountain (14.22) and Connor Ham (14.36) placing fifth, sixth and eighth, respectively.
Corey Hertz earned his first All-MVC honor in an open race after placing third in the men's 400 meters, running a time of 47.48 for a career-best. UNI brought in a total of 13 points in the race with Brett McCalla placing fifth (47.83) and Evan Long in sixth (48.03). On the women's side, Maddie Bell added to the PRs with one of her own, finishing in fifth overall with a time of 55.05.
Jacob Smith placed second overall in the men's 400 meter hurdles, grabbing his first all-conference honor as a freshman. He set a new PR time of 51.47 to earn eight points on the men's side. Raheem Black added a point to the men's team's finish, placing eighth in the race with a time of 57.02.
Lindsey Kite, who finished third at last year's meet, won the women's 800 meter run today with a time of 2:14.67. Lyndsie Schinkel doubled her all-conference awards from the indoor season with a third place finish in today's race with a time of 2:15.58 with Theresa Connelly scoring key team points in sixth place with a time of 2:18.36.
The men's middle distance runners also scored points toward the team total with Luke Johnston placing third overall to earn All-MVC, clocking a time of 1:53.94. Colynn Black also contributed four points with his fifth place finish with a time of 1:55.34.
Moving into the distance races, Hannah Truniger ran away with her second all-conference honor of the weekend, placing third overall in the women's 5,000 meters. The freshman finished the race in 17:38.49 after also placing second in the 10,000 meters on Friday night.
In the field, Isaac Holtz defended his discus title with a mark of 190-8 to rank him No. 3 all-time at UNI and No. 9 in the NCAA West heading into the weekend. The Panthers scored 28 total points in the discus throw with Brad Walski placing second (180-11, PR, 23rd in the West), Evan Colfack in fourth (177-8, PR, 32nd in the West), Thomas Yezek in fifth (177-5, PR, 33rd in the West) and Jake Humpal in eighth (164-9, PR) to round out the outstanding outing from the Panthers throw crew.
Junior Sarah Pate earned her second All-MVC honor of the weekend with a second place finish in the discus throw for eight points. The Osceola, Iowa, native recorded a mark of 163-11.00, giving her a new PR and ranking her No. 3 all-time at UNI.
The Panthers ended the day with a win after the men's 4X400 meter relay team of Hertz, Smith, McCalla and Long bringing home the title. The team finished with a time of 3:10.18, ranking them No. 45 in the NCAA West heading into the conference weekend.
The NCAA West Preliminary Round will take place May 25-27 in Austin, Texas. A list of the UNI qualifiers will be available on www.UNIPanthers.com when the NCAA announces the declarations next week.
