Panthers To Compete At Drake Relays

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The UNI track and field program will stay in the state of Iowa for the second consecutive week as they take on the 2017 Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa, April 26-29.
The Panthers will compete in 14 events on the women's side and 16 on the men's throughout the weekend, going head-to-head with teams from across the country. UNI will compete against teams from the Big 12, Big 10, SEC and the Missouri Valley along with multiple other conferences being represented at the historic meet.
UNI will kick off the meet on Wednesday when Austin Heitland and Cade Kirkpatrick will start the first day of the decathlon and Lauren Frederick, Brooke Lorenz and Amanda Wiebke will all take on the heptathlon. Both Kirkpatrick and Frederick are sitting in scoring position in the MVC with Frederick ranking No. 6 in the heptathlon and Kirkpatrick sitting at No. 4 in the decathlon.
The Panthers will take part in the distance carnival on Thursday night with Kelsey Kirchoff in the 10,000 meter run and freshman Hannah Truniger competing in the 5,000 meters. Truniger ranks No. 2 all-time at UNI in the 5,000 meters with a time of 16:52.67 while Kirchoff ran the fourth fastest time in school history in the 10K in 2016 (36:38.29).
UNI will have a full day on Friday with 16-plus athletes competing in the field and on the track. Senior Brandon Carnes will highlight the day in the 100 meter dash, coming off the Musco Twilight where he shattered his own UNI and conference records with a time of 10.06. It ranks him first in the MVC and NCAA West region and No. 5 overall in the country.
A quartet of hurdlers will also compete on Friday with Jon Rus, Connor Ham, Cole Phillips and Daurice Fountain all taking part in the 110 meter Hurdles. All four athletes are currently in scoring position in the Valley with Rus and Phillips also ranking No. 25 and No. 41 in the NCAA West, respectively.
Junior Sarah Pate will take to the field on Saturday, competing in the women's hammer throw. The Osceola, Iowa, native enters the meet ranked No. 10 in the NCAA West region after breaking the UNI record in the hammer throw with a toss of 203-6.00.
On the men's side, a pair of throwers will look to improve their PRs with Isaac Holtz and Brad Walski competing in the hammer throw, the shot put and the discus. Holtz ranks No. 25 in the NCAA West and No. 2 in the MVC in the discus while Walski is sitting at No. 30 in the West and No. 1 in the Valley in the hammer.
