Nate Oakland, a 19-year college coaching veteran, completed his 3rd season on the UNI Women’s Basketball staff after the 2024-25 season. This is his second stint with the Panthers, having served on head coach Tanya Warren’s first staff upon her arrival at UNI.
Prior to rejoining UNI in the 2022-23 season, Oakland spent three seasons as the Head Women’s Basketball Coach at Upper Iowa University. During his time with the Peacocks, Oakland helped improve the team’s record each year, including more than doubling their overall wins record in season three. He recruited and coached multiple NSIC all-freshman team members, including future First-team All-NSIC selection Lydia Haack.
Before becoming the head coach of the Peacocks, Oakland spent two seasons with the North Dakota State University as an assistant coach under Maren Walseth. Before his time at NDSU, he was the Head Women’s Basketball Coach at Coe College, where he led the Kohawks to 27 wins, and a 2017 Final Four appearance in the IIAC Tournament. He coached three IIAC-First Team members.
Prior to being named Head Coach at Coe College, Oakland had stops as an Assistant Coach at Wartburg College (2011-2015), was an assistant coach at Coe College under Randi (Peterson) Henderson from 2009-2011, which included a trip to the NCAA Sweet-16, and the University of Minnesota-Morris (2005-06).
In addition to coaching basketball, Oakland was the Head men’s golf coach at Wartburg College for three years and the men’s and women’s tennis teams during his time at Minnesota-Morris. Oakland is a Northern Iowa graduate with a Bachelor's Degree in Sports Psychology (2004) and a Master of Arts in Sports Psychology (2011).
As well as Coaching, Oakland has extensive classroom teaching experience with teaching courses related to Sport Management, Sports Psychology, and Kinesiology, as well as Coaching Theory classes. He is also involved in the Cedar Valley in many volunteer and leadership initiatives which aids in the development of community relationships and partnerships.
Oakland is a Cedar Falls native and is married to former UNI Panther Women’s Basketball Hall-of-Famer Alex Cook–Oakland (’05). The two reside in Cedar Falls with their five children, daughters Jordann and Quinncy, and sons Eli, Kaiden, and Maddox.
