Mari Shavers joined the UNI track and field coaching staff as a volunteer assistant coach ahead of the 2023-24 season, with a focus in coaching in the throwing events.
A Waterloo, Iowa native, Shavers was a two-year member of the Panther roster after transferring to UNI from Hawkeye Community College. During her UNI career, Shavers left her mark as one of the best hammer throwers in program history, finishing her career with the second-best hammer throw in UNI history of 65.58 meters. Shavers finished in the top-five in the hammer throw five times during the 2023 outdoor season, taking second place in the event at the MVC Outdoor Championships and joined teammate Makenna Wilson as the first Panther women to qualify for the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the event. She would place 22nd in the hammer throw in her final collegiate meet, earning All-American Honorable Mention honors.
Shavers also took fifth in the weight throw at the 2023 MVC Indoor Championships (17.73m) and seventh in the event at the 2022 conference indoor championships. She also grabbed 11th place in the indoor shot put at conference in 2022.
During her career at Hawkeye Community College, Shavers earned All-American honors as a freshman after a seventh place finish at the 2020 NJCAA Indoor Championships in the weight throw (16.00m). She also claimed 17th place at the meet in the shot put (10.59m).
Shavers graduated from UNI in the spring of 2023 with a degree in criminal justice.
