Ryan Mahaffey returns to UNI as the offensive coordinator in 2019.
Mahaffey previously served as the co-offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach for the Panthers. He returns to Cedar Falls after a two-year stint as the tight ends coach at Western Kentucky.
Â
Mahaffey made his name at UNI as a three-time All-Conference tight end and fullback for the Panthers. During his time, UNI earned three consecutive conference titles. He graduated in 2011, earning his degree in economics. He also earned MVFC Scholar-Athlete honors in 2009 and 2010. He was also a team captain in 2010.
Â
He went on to play two years in the NFL, suiting up for the Baltimore Ravens, the Indianapolis Colts and Miami Dolphins.
Â
He returned to UNI in 2013 to coach tight ends before joining Brian Kelly’s staff at Notre Dame as a graduate assistant working with wide receivers during the 2014 and 2015 seasons. He worked with Will Fuller, who earned second-team All-American honors after racking up 1,258 yards and 14 touchdowns.
Â
In 2016, he was named the co-offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach at UNI. He coached Jalen Rima and Trevor Allen to MVFC All-Newcomer Team honors.
Â
In 2017, he was named the tight ends coach at Western Kentucky where he coach Deon Yelder to Honorable Mention All-Conference USA honors after he recorded 52 receptions for 688 yards, the most all-time for a tight end for the Hilltoppers. He also scored seven TDs and played in the Cure Bowl.
After entering his senior season without a single reception to his name, Yelder finished the year as one of WKU's all-time greats. He received the single-largest guarantee for an undrafted free agent in the 2018 draft cycle (New Orleans Saints). He is currently on the active roster of the Kansas City Chiefs.
Â
In 2018, Mik’Quan Deane earned Second-Team All-Conference USA honors with 530 yards and six touchdowns.
Â
He has recruited the Midwest extensively, including his home state of Iowa. He also added new territory in the South with his position at Western Kentucky.
Â
He is a Grinnell, Iowa, native and is married to former UNI golfer Molly Schemm.
