Griffin McCarley entered his first season at UNI in fall of 2022 as an assistant coach for the linebackers.
Â
McCarley came to UNI from Kansas State, where in his first season in Manhattan, McCarley helped K-State’s defense trim 12.2 points per game off its average from the previous year, as the Wildcats’ mark of 21.0 was their best mark since 2003 and ranked 23rd nationally. Additionally, Kansas State surrendered its fewest yards allowed per game since 2009 (344.7), while their 129.5 rushing yards allowed per game was their best effort in four years.
Prior to Kansas State, he worked the previous three seasons as a graduate assistant at Troy with the Trojans’ inside and outside linebackers.
Â
With McCarley’s assistance, Troy’s defense posted one of the best turnarounds in the nation in 2020 as the Trojans improved 63 spots nationally in scoring defense from 2019 to 2020 and 38 spots in total defense.
Â
Prior to Troy, McCarley spent two seasons as a student assistant at West Alabama, helping coach the linebackers and defensive line. He also played collegiately at North Alabama as a linebacker, where the Lions won a pair of Gulf South Conference titles.
Â
A native of Haleyville, Alabama, McCarley graduated from West Alabama with a bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary studies with a focus in sport management/physical education in 2018. He is married to the former Allison Pursifull. The couple have a daughter, Kennedy.Â
