ST. LOUIS --- UNI's Joey Perry and Brendan Safley have been named the Missouri Valley Conference's (MVC) Field Athletes of the Week, as announced by the league office on Tuesday afternoon.Â
The selection marks Perry's first career weekly conference honor, while Safley also earns his first career outdoor honor from the league after being named MVC Men's Field Athlete of the Week twice this winter during the indoor season.
Perry, a sophomore from Winneconne, Wisconsin, captured the heptathlon title this past weekend at the Wartburg Outdoor Select, scoring a career-high 4,873 points while also winning the 200-meter dash as part of the multi-event competition. She currently leads the league with the conference's top performance this season in the event while ranking 23rd in the nation.
Safely, a Kansas City, Missouri native, captured the men's pole vault title at Wartburg with a 5.30-meter vault, an MVC-best mark and early top-20 in the nation performance. An All-MVC indoor team selection this winter, Safely won the MVC indoor pole vaulting title with a 5.45-meter vault in Chicago last month.
Indiana State's Rachel Mehringer was named the MVC Women's Track Athlete of the Week, while Bradley's Jack Crull earned men's track honors.
Perry, Safely and the Panthers return to action on Friday afternoon as UNI competes at the Jim Duncan Invitational in Des Moines. Competition is slated to begin at 12:30 p.m. CT at Drake Stadium.
