Panthers drop a pair of Big Red Spring Fling contests

UNI softball opened the Big Red Spring Fling with a pair of losses to #19 Nebraska and SDSU.
LINCOLN, Neb. — UNI softball opened its last non-conference tournament in Lincoln, Nebraska at the Big Red Spring Fling on Saturday, March 8. UNI took on no. 19 Nebraska and South Dakota State on day one which ended with a 14-1, five-inning loss to Nebraska and a 6-1 loss to South Dakota State.
GAME ONE | #19 Nebraska 14, UNI 1
The Cornhusker offense showed why the program is ranked one of the tops in the country with four runs in the home half of the first, seven in the bottom of the second, two in the third and one in the fourth to take home a 14-1 victory. Addison McElrath scored the Panthers' lone run in the top of the fourth inning on her sixth homerun of the season.
McElrath and Ella Smithson recorded the lone hits for the Cats while Morgan Vertz and Carly Goodwin combined for UNI's three strikeouts in the circle.
GAME TWO | SDSU 6, UNI 1
The Panthers got on the board first in the top of the first inning on a sacrifice fly from Kate Lappe with the bases loaded. Kylee Sanders scored UNI's lone run of the game on the tag. South Dakota State put up three runs in the bottom of the first inning and single runs in the bottom of the third, fourth, and fifth innings to claim a 6-1 victory over the Panthers.
Sanders recorded the lone hit of the game. Anna Wischnowski and Kara Maiers combined for four strikeouts in the circle.
UP NEXT
The Panthers wrap up the Big Red Spring Fling on Sunday with matchups against Northern Colorado and #19 Nebraska. First pitch against Northern Colorado is scheduled for 11 a.m. CT and first pitch against Nebraska is slated for 4 p.m. CT with streaming available on B1G+.
