CEDAR FALLS, Iowa --- The UNI men's basketball team scored a season-high 99 points and forced a season-high 22 opposing turnovers on Monday night, cruising past the Division III Coe Kohawks inside the McLeod Center in non-conference play.
Senior guard Trey Campbell surpassed 1,000 points in his collegiate career, while freshman Geon Hutchins put on a show in the second half as the Panthers improve to 7-1 on the year with a 65-point win, the largest margin of victory in program history.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Panthers opened the game with a hot hand with a 9-0 scoring run, sinking seven of their first 11 shot attempts from the field. UNI would stretch the lead to 31-8 using a 19-0 run while holding the Kohawks to ten straight missed shot attempts. Northern Iowa shot 60% from the field in the first 20 minutes with seven made three-pointers on 50% shooting, with Campbell leading the charge with 12 points. Kyle Pock, Ben Schwieger and Leon Bond III all tallied five points each as the Panthers took a commanding 46-18 lead into halftime.
Northern Iowa continued to roll in the second half, opening the period on a 12-0 scoring run. Hutchins would take command in the final 20 minutes of play with 15 points on six-of-eight shooting, with Chase Courbat posting eight points in the half. UNI forced 11 Kohawk turnovers in the half and outscored Coe by a 17-2 margin off takeaways, as well as 18-4 inside the paint in the period to extend its lead late while shooting 61% from the field in the frame.
Hutchins finished the night with a career-high 18 points and nine rebounds in the Panther victory, with Campbell posting 15 points with three made three-pointers. Chase Courbat set a new career-high with 12 points, as both Pock and Schwiger each finished with 11 points each. Max Weisbrod tallied nine points with five assists, with RJ Taylor posting a career-high nine assists and Ismaël Diouf notching seven points as well. Bond finished with five points and Tristan Smith four points.
We created enough turnovers, turning those into quick attacks and playing faster in those situations, said head coach Ben Jacobson. We definitely had more of those chances in the second half. Chase also had a terrific game tonight. The way he played tonight is the way he's been practicing for us. Then with Trey and his 1,000th point, it really takes you back to just how much time these guys really put in.
