UNI women’s basketball: Panthers split matchups in Las Vegas after a loss to UNLV

UNI women’s basketball dropped its fourth contest of the season in a 62-56 matchup against the Rebels.
LAS VEGAS --- UNI women's basketball wrapped up play at the UNLV Thanksgiving Tournament on Black Friday against tournament-host UNLV. The Rebels opened the contest on a hot streak and continued to knock down key shots as they took home a 62-56 victory over UNI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
UNLV opened the game with 11 straight points and put the Panthers in an early hole. UNI hit four threes in the period, including a pair from Taryn Wharton, but the Rebels answered each triple with one of their own and held an 11-point lead after the first ten minutes of play. The Panther defense held UNLV to just seven points in the second quarter while the offense scored 14 to cut the UNLV lead to four points at 26-30 at the halftime break. The quarter saw a seven-point run from the Cats to close out the frame, including a buzzer-beating layup from Elise Jaeger. She led UNI with seven points and seven rebounds in the first half.
The Rebels held the advantage in the third quarter with a slight, 15-10 edge in the frame which included a seven-point run at the midway point. UNLV held a nine-point lead at 45-36 heading into the final frame. In the fourth quarter, UNI won the 10 minutes 20-17, but could not overcome the Rebel lead as they dropped the contest 62-56.
Taryn Wharton led the Panther offense with 19 points. She added four boards and four assists. Elise Jaeger was the other Panther in double figures with 13 points. Jaeger led all players with 14 boards and added four assists.
ADDITIONAL NOTES
- UNI falls to 2-4 on the season after the loss to UNLV. The Panthers are now 0-2 all-time against the Rebels.
- Elise Jaeger finished with her second double-double of the season and the fourth of her career with the 13/14 performance.
- UNI continued an active program-record 552-game three-pointer streak with seven triples against UNLV.
- Taryn Wharton recorded a career-high 19 points in the contest.
UP NEXT
The Panthers open conference play on December 3 inside the McLeod Center against Illinois State. Tipoff in Cedar Falls is scheduled for 6 p.m. CT and will be broadcast on ESPN+ and the Panther Sports Radio Network.
