UNI controls the interior game in 18-point road victory. Panthers battle in-state rival Drake next Wednesday night.
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. --- Four Panther starters finished in double-digit scoring figures on Saturday afternoon as the UNI men's basketball team took down the Indiana State Sycamores by a score of 74-56 inside the Hulman Center in Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) play.
Northern Iowa's offense in transition and attacking of the paint paid dividends in snapping its four-game skid to the Sycamores, the reigning MVC regular season champions. Shooting a solid 48.1% from the field, UNI held Indiana State under 35% shooting despite allowing eight three-point field goals on 28 attempts.
HOW IT HAPPENED
UNI grabbed an early lead on the Sycamores with a 5-0 scoring run out of the gate, while its defense, facing off against the league's highest scoring offense and leader in three-point shot attempts, held Indiana State to 32.3% shooting. Despite early foul troubles, Tytan Anderson helped steady the Panther offense through the first 20 minutes with seven points, as Trey Campbell, Ben Schwieger and Jacob Hutson all knocked down three-point shots. Northern Iowa also led in the rebounding battle in the first frame, pulling down 22 boards to the Sycamores' 15. With Schwieger leading the way with ten first half points, plus eight from Hutson and seven a piece from both Anderson and Campbell, the Panthers took a 38-26 lead into the halftime break.
Indiana State would cut deep into Northern Iowa's lead out of halftime as its three-point shooting cut the Panther edge to as few as three points midway through the second period. A strong half from Hutson and Anderson inside the paint however would soon return the UNI lead back to double-digits as the Panthers forced eight Sycamore turnovers in the final 20 minutes of action. Shooting 48.1% from the floor in the second half and recording three steals, the Panthers cruised in the final minutes of the game to notch an 18-point victory and their third road win in league play.
Hutson finished the afternoon with a game-high 19 points and a career-best 12 rebounds for his first career double-double, with Schwieger recording 15 points, five rebounds and three assists. Campbell tallied 14 points, five boards, five assists, three steals and two blocks in the win, while Anderson posted 14 points and six rebounds. Leon Bond III finished with six points, as Max Weisbrod recorded four points and a pair of rebounds.
