All-American defensive lineman Khristian Boyd selected 199th overall to New Orleans
DETROIT — Former UNI defensive lineman Khristian Boyd joined the pantheon of Panther greats hearing their names called on draft night as the All-American defender was selected 199th overall to the New Orleans Saints in the sixth round of the NFL Draft on Saturday.
The Kansas City, Missouri native entered the draft process as relatively unknown, but put his skills on display for pro teams throughout his redshirt senior season in 2023, as well as during the Hula Bowl and Shrine Bowl.
A product of Blue Springs High School, Boyd finished his career with 149 total tackles including 22.5 tackles for a loss of 78 yards and 10.5 sacks for 59 yards. The two-time All-MVFC and All-American defensive lineman finished his senior season with 43 tackles and 3.5 sacks in 11 games. He was named to multiple All-MVFC teams as well as All-American teams.
"Khristian is a self made player," said UNI head football coach Mark Farley. "He came in and has worked for five off seasons to build himself into the kind of player that he is. He wanted to take every rep, never wanted to be taken out. He has that tenacity and that drive and that commitment to be great and now he has the chance to play in the NFL and to prove to people that he belongs in the NFL and there is no doubt that he belongs in the NFL. It is going to be exciting to watch him play!"
Boyd becomes the 23rd football player to be drafted out of the University of Northern Iowa, and the first Panther defensive lineman selected since James Jones in 1991 (Cleveland Browns). He is also the tenth UNI player selected in the NFL Draft in the Mark Farley era, as well as the second straight Panther picked up by the Saints.
