Five Panthers score in double digits in non-conference win. UNI hosts Montana on Monday night.
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa --- Jacob Hutson and Trey Campbell combined for over 40 points as the UNI men's basketball team extended its winning streak to a season-high three games with a 78-58 win over the Omaha Mavericks inside the McLeod Center on Friday night.
Northern Iowa overcame a slow start offensively and dominated from both inside the paint and at the free throw line to record its second straight win by 20 points or more. UNI also committed a season-low seven turnovers and made a season-high 28 free throws in its non-conference victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Both the Panthers and Mavericks opened the game slow out of the gate offensively with Omaha hitting a pair of early three-point shots. Tytan Anderson would get UNI back into the game with a set of free throws as both teams struggled to find the bottom of the net thanks to stellar defense on both ends of the floor. Northern Iowa would draw contact and get into the bonus late in the half and ultimately snap a three-point shooting skid, with Anderson knocking down the first of three straight baskets from beyond the arc, which included back-to-back buckets from Campbell. UNI would close the half on a 16-0 scoring run with 48% shooting, taking a 34-23 lead into the halftime break.
Northern Iowa shot 47.6% from the field in the second period, extending its scoring run to 25 straight points with a 9-0 run to open the half. The Mavericks would cut down the Panthers' 21-point lead down to 11 thanks to eight made triples in the final 20 minutes, but UNI's pressure in the paint and hot shooting from Campbell, Anderson and Ben Schwieger helped build the Panther lead back. Hutson led Northern Iowa with 14 second half points with five made free throws as UNI cruised past the Mavericks by a 20-point margin.
Hutson finished the night with a game-high 21 points, tying a career-high with eight made free throws and a season-best five assists. Campbell set a new season-highs in points (20) and rebounds (8) while also notching five assists, as Anderson scored 12 points. Leon Bond III registered 11 points, with Schwieger posting ten points and a career-high nine rebounds.
