Panthers fall to Auburn at the buzzer

UNI women’s basketball opened the Paradise Jam Island Tournament with a 65-64 loss to Auburn.
ST. THOMAS, U.S. Virgin Islands — UNI women's basketball opened Paradise Jam play with a matchup against the Tigers of Auburn. A back-and-forth game saw the Panthers take the lead with close to no time left on the clock before a corner three from Auburn sealed the deal for the Tigers as they took a 65-64 victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Tigers opened the matchup with a quick, 6-0 run before an and-one layup from Kayba Laube ended the run. Auburn recorded a layup to take an 8-3 lead into the first-quarter media timeout. Back-and-forth baskets out of the timeout took the teams to the first quarter break with a score of 7-12 in favor of Auburn.
Taryn Wharton opened the second quarter with a jump shot before a pair of Auburn baskets to give the Tigers a 16-9 lead. Kaylynn Janes drained a three-pointer to cut into the Auburn lead before four more points for the Tigers to give Auburn an eight-point lead at 20-12. The Panthers edged out the Tigers down the back half of the second quarter with a 14-11 run to head into the halftime break with Auburn holding a 31-26 lead.
Seven straight points from Maya McDermott for the Panthers notted the game at 33 points before an and-one layup from Auburn gave the Panthers the lead before Kayba Laube answered with her first three-pointer of the game to tie the contest at 36 at the five-minute media timeout. Both teams scored 13 points down the back side of the third quarter, including a seven-point run from Auburn, a pair of threes from Laube, and a buzzer-beating three-pointer from the logo from McDermott to tie the game at 49 heading into the final frame.
Auburn opened the fourth with a pair of buckets to take a four-point lead. Back-and-forth buckets and another four-point run from the Tigers gave Auburn a 59-55 lead into the fourth-quarter media timeout. A layup from Goebel and a three-pointer from McDermott tied the game at 60. Auburn took the lead with a layup before McDermott drew foul shots to take a 64-62 lead with short time. A three-pointer from Auburn gave the Tigers the victory at 65-64 at the final whistle.
Maya McDermott led the Panthers with 29 points. She added four assists to her total. Kayba Laube was the other lone Panther in double figures with 12 points.

- UNI falls to 3-2 on the season and 0-1 all-time against the Tigers of Auburn.
- Kaylynn Janes tied a career-high with one three-pointer against the Tigers.
