CEDAR FALLS, Iowa — UNI women's basketball guard Maya McDermott brought in more weekly honors after a standout performance against the no. 8-ranked Cyclones of Iowa State. McDermott was named to the US Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) Ann Meyers Drysdale National Player of the Week and the Associated Press (AP) Women's Basketball Player of the Week runner up. These are the Panthers' first weekly honors from either outlet in program history.
A Johnston, Iowa native, Maya McDermott led all scorers in UNI's 87-75, upset victory over no. 8 Iowa State. The win was the Panthers' first victory over a top-10 opponent in program history. In the game, McDermott scored a career-high 37 points on a career-high 14 field goals including three three-pointers. McDermott also added five rebounds, four assists, and three steals on the afternoon. The 37 points were McDermott's most of the season, her first 30+-point game since the MVC Tournament semifinal against Drake last season, and the third 30+-point game of her career. McDermott became the first UNI Panther to record 30+ points against a top-10 opponent in Panther history.
McDermott and the Panthers are back in action on Thanksgiving Thursday as they take on the Auburn Tigers in the Virgin Islands as a part of the Paradise Jam Tournament. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. CT and can be streamed on ESPN+ or listened to on the Panther Sports Radio Network.
