Panther Train wins five titles in season opener at Grand View Open

UNI opens 2024-25 season with 67 bonus point victories in 104 match wins. Panthers host South Dakota State on Nov. 24 in the UNI-Dome for first dual of the season.
GRIMES, Iowa — The UNI wrestling team kicked off the 2024-25 season in style on Saturday with 27 athletes in action at the Grand View Open in the greater Des Moines area, with the Panthers picking up five titles.
Sixteen total Northern Iowa wrestlers meanwhile earned placements at the event. Additionally, the Panthers posted a combined record of 104-34 (.753) with 67 bonus-point wins and 31 pins. UNI also went a combined 26-1 in its first round matches.
Returning from injury, Cory Land captured his first Grand View Open title since 2022 with a title in the 133-pound open division, four falls in under three minutes and finishing the tournament with all bonus point victories. At 141 pounds, Cael Happel also dominated the field with multiple bonus-point victories, earning two technical falls, two major decisions and one fall in the final matchup.
Reigning Big 12 champion Ryder Downey (157 pounds), finished his first tournament of the year with straight bonus-point wins, as Wyatt Voelker (197 pounds) won five of his six matches in bonus points, capturing his second career Grand View Open title (2022). Lance Runyon meanwhile, also returning from injury and making his debut at heavyweight, posted four falls and a major decision for his first Grand View Open crown, besting UNI teammate Adam Ahrendsen in a 5-2 decision.
Jack Thomsen (165 pounds) finished second in the open bracket at 165 pounds, opening the tournament with a pin in two minutes, 33 seconds in his opening match before scoring another pair of major decision wins before falling to No. 9 MJ Gaitan (Iowa State) in the finals.
Both Adam Allard (149 pounds) and Jared Simma (174 pounds) placed third respectively, with Allard posting a 4-1 record, while Simma went 5-1. Nick Fox (174 pounds) and Kalob Runyon (197 pounds) both placed fourth in their respective weight classes.

UP NEXT
The Panthers return to action on Sunday, Nov. 24 when No. 14 UNI hosts No. 13 South Dakota State in its first dual of the season inside the UNI-Dome. Competition is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. CT with live coverage available on FloWrestling and CFU Channel 15.
