
Panthers track and field opens 2024 at Hawkeye Invitational

UNI track and field ends the Hawkeye Invitational with four individual champions.
IOWA CITY, Iowa – The UNI track and field team competed in their first meet of 2024 in Iowa City at the Hawkeye Invitational hosted by Iowa. The Panthers finished the weekend with four individual champions.
Kicking off the meet on Friday were the throwers. In the weight throw, Sarah Byrd finished in sixth place on the women's side with a throw of 16.77 meters. In the shot put, Katie Fare and Jorie Hanenburg finished in second and eighth place respectively on the women's side with a throw of 15.82 meters for Fare and a career-best 12.89 meters for Hanenburg. On the men's side, Carson Lienau led the Panthers with a second-place finish and a career-best throw of 17.62 meters. Behind him were Spencer Kessell in third place with a throw of 17.41 meters, Sebastian Swistak in sixth place with a career-best throw of 16.63 meters, and David Russell in eighth place with a throw of 15.93 meters.
Saturday began the rest of the events for the meet. In the women's high jump, Rylie Todd took silver for UNI with a jump of 1.65 meters. Three more Panthers placed in the top eight, all with career-best jumps. Chloe Largen finished with a mark of 1.65 meters, Josie Moreland finished with 1.65 meters, and Soren Maricle recorded 1.65 meters.
In the women's 400-meter, Libby Wedewer led the Panthers with a time of 59.44 and a fifth-place finish. She was followed closely by teammate Ella Santi who recorded a career-best, 1:03.79, seventh-place finish. On the men's side, Tinashe Chigudu finished with a career-best time of 49.23 for a second-place finish.
The 600-meter saw Sophia Jungling lead the Panthers on the women's side with a seventh-place finish and a time of 1:35.45. On the men's side, two Panthers finished with career-bests in the race. Chase Knoche finished with a time of 1:18.07 and in third place while Micaiah Ellis recorded an eighth-place finish and a time of 1:20.30.
The 60-meter hurdles saw seventh and eighth-place finishes by UNI runners on the women's side with Paige Kisley finishing in 8.82 seconds and Olivia Kramer crossing the line in 8.94 seconds. On the men's side, the Panthers picked up fifth, sixth, and seventh-place finishes on the legs of Jack Sumners (8.15 seconds), Hunter Manock (8.31 seconds), and Carter Accola (8.55 seconds).
Jill Bennett finished the 60-meter in seventh-place with a time of 7.73 seconds. Luke Meyers and Jerome Jessup both recorded career-bests in the men's 60-meter with Meyers running a third-place 6.82 seconds and Jessup finishing in a fourth-place 6.86 seconds.
Emma Hoins took home bronze in the women's one-mile with a career-best time of 4:54.46.
UNI found a lot of success in the 800 meter with the women's and men's individual champion. Liza Schaffer finished in first place with a career-best time of 2:18.00. She was followed by a second-place Kaylin Lacher with a career-best time of 2:21.58 and a fourth-place Makenna Edwards with a career-best time of 2:35.22. On the men's side, Jayden Dickson crossed the line first with a time of 1:53.93. He was followed by a fourth-place Kon Dut who recorded a time of 1:57.25 and a sixth-place Karson Kleve with a time of 1:57.65.
The Panther swept the podium in the women's pole vault with a first-place finish from Alivia Silvestri with a height of 3.65 meters. Hannah Wallace and Isabelle Cox finished in second and third place, both with a career-best height of 3.10 meters. Brendan Safley claimed the individual title in the men's pole vault with a height of 5.10 meters.
The long jump saw three women and four men place in the top eight for the Panthers. Katy Stephens and Kallie Greiner recorded career-bests with third and fourth-place finishes respectively and jumps of 5.58 and 5.30 meters. Maleah Walker jumped 5.29 meters for a fifth-place finish. On the men's side, Zack Butcher took second place with a jump of 7.17 meters and Drew Bartles finished in third place with a jump of 6.83 meters. Jack Sumners and Brody Lovell finished in fourth and sixth place with jumps of 6.71 and 6.44 meters respectively.
The men's 200 meter featured a fifth-place finish from Kaden Emanuel with a time of 22.56 seconds and a career-best finish from Austin Kunkle with a time of 22.70 seconds and a sixth-place finish.
In the women's 4x400 meter, the Panther team of Libby Wedewer, Auriona Kimbrough, Sophia Jungling, and Jill Bennett finished in fourth place with a time of 3:55.13. Less than a second behind them was the team of Joey Perry, Eden Barrett, Darci Wiseman, and Anna Winterrowd with a time of 3:55.20 in fifth place. On the men's side, the team of Zack Butcher, Luke Meyers, Chase Knoche, and Tinashe Chigudu crossed the line in second place with a time of 3:17.94. Coming in at 3:24.44 and in fifth place was the team of Brody Lovell, Jerome Jessup, Micaiah Ellis, and Kaden Emanuel and in sixth place with a time of 3:28.71 was the team of Zach Fall, Titus Jackson, Jayden Dickson, and Kon Dut.
Caleb Shumaker finished the men's 3,000-meter in fourth place with a time of 8:37.64.
