All-Conference kicker and defensive back both selected to Second Team in first preseason honors of the summer.
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa --- UNI defensive back Woo Governor and kicker Matthew Cook were named to The Bluebloods FCS Second Team All-America, as announced by the college football website on Wednesday.
Governor, a rising senior from Plant City, Florida, enters his fourth season with the Panthers this fall after earning Second Team All-Missouri Valley Football Conference (MVFC) recognition in 2022, as well as Bluebloods First Team All-MVFC recognition. Appearing in all 11 games for UNI last season, Governor notched 61 total tackles with four interceptions for the Panther defense, including a pair of interception returns for touchdowns against Western Illinois, which tied a UNI school record for most interception returns in a single game and season.
Cook, a Cedar Falls, Iowa product entering his fifth season at UNI, was named to three All-America teams in 2022 (AP Second Team, STATS Perform Third Team, HERO Sports First Team) after a record-setting season. Converting on 82% of his field goal attempts (14-of-17), Cook set both the UNI and MVFC records for career field goals made (67), and also broke the Panther record with 124 consecutive made PAT kicks in his career.
UNI kicks off the 2023 season on Sept. 2 at Iowa State. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. CST.
