Panther wrestlers lead Big 12 with 20 All-Academic selections

UNI sets a program record with 18 First Team All-Academic honorees. Four Panthers selected with a 4.00 GPA.
IRVING, Tex. --- A record 20 UNI wrestlers picked up Big 12 All-Academic honors on Wednesday as the conference announced its winter sport honorees for the 2022-23 season.
18 Panthers landed spots on the league's first team for maintaining a 3.20 cumulative grade point average (GPA) or better, another program record, while another pair of UNI student-athletes were named to the second team with a GPA between 3.00 and 3.19. The program's previous record for All-Conference Academic selections came in 2021 with 18. UNI joined the Big 12 Conference as an affiliate member for wrestling in 2017-18.
In addition to maintaining a steady GPA, student-athletes must also have competed in at least 20% of their team's total competitions on the season. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Seniors who participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percentage of participation are also eligible.
The Panthers' 20 total selections leads the conference among its wrestling programs. South Dakota State earned 19 selections, with 14 athletes from Missouri being honored. Utah Valley picked up 13 honorees, with 12 coming from Oklahoma.
Among the group of Panthers, four were nominated for Big 12 academic recognition with a 4.00 GPA, including Kyle Biscoglia, Tyrell Gordon, Lance Runyon and Connor Thorpe.
