UNI also sets a program record with seven Scholar-Athlete All-America selections, tied for second most in the nation.
MANHEIM, Pa. --- UNI wrestling cracked the top-five nationally with the fourth-best team grade point average (GPA) in the nation and set a new program record with seven individual honorees, as the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) announced its 2022-23 Scholar All-America Teams and individual athlete honorees on Friday afternoon.
This year's slate of recognized athletes from Division I includes 291 individuals representing 73 institutions. Harvard, Minnesota, Ohio State and South Dakota State led the nation with eight individual selections. In addition to UNI, Drexel, Missouri, Oklahoma, Penn and Wisconsin each had seven. The NWCA also recognizes the top-30 programs with Scholar All-America Team honors.Â
Recording a team GPA of 3.48, the Panthers were the highest ranked team in the Big 12 Conference to earn Scholar All-America Team recognition, marking the seventh season in which the purple and gold have earned team honors. Four other Big 12 programs were also included on the top-30 list, including North Dakota State (8th - 3.47), South Dakota State (10th - 3.46), Cal Baptist (12th - 3.45) and Utah Valley (28th - 3.30).Â
Individually, Panther student-athletes broke the program's previous single-season record of five individual honors (2007) with a standout season in the classroom. Kyle Biscoglia (133 pounds) becomes the seventh wrestler in program history to earn NWCA Scholar-Athlete status three times in his career, while 2023 NCAA runner-up Parker Keckeisen (184 pounds), as well as NCAA qualifier Tyrell Gordon and Lance Runyon earn the honor for the second consecutive year. Noah Glaser, Colin Realbuto and Kyle Gohlhoffer all earn their first NWCA Scholar-Athlete selection.
Wrestling recorded the second highest team GPA among UNI's men's programs during the fall 2022 semester. Six of UNI's seven NWCA Scholar-Athlete selections recorded a GPA of 3.60 or higher.
