UNI tennis splits Valparaiso, Missouri State with pair of 4-3 duals

Panthers edge Beacons on Saturday, but fall to Bears on Sunday.
WATERLOO, Iowa — UNI tennis split its two Missouri Valley Conference home duals over the weekend at the Black Hawk Tennis Club, with both duals coming down to one match each. The Panthers scored their first win over Valparaiso in a 4-3 win on Saturday afternoon, but would fall short on Sunday in a 4-3 loss to Missouri State.
Opening the weekend up against the Beacons, Thaissa Moreira battled back from a first-set loss to defeat Mia Bertino, 1-6, 6-4, 6-4 in the No. 5 singles slot, securing the decisive fourth team-point to give UNI its first win over Valparaiso since 2019. Andrijana Brkic grabbed her 24th singles win of the year with a three-set victory over Olivia Czerwonka, while Darta Dalecka took down Moira Silva, 6-2, 6-3 in the No. 2 singles match.
In doubles, Lorena Cardoso and Dalecka earned their 11th win as a pair this year in a 6-2 win against Amanda Tabanera/Elizabeth Sobieski. Issa Sullivan and Moreira also would pick up a 6-3 win in doubles against Demi Jhaveri and Eleanor Chapman.
Facing off against the Bears, the Panthers would challenge Missouri State in doubles, but would come away with just one victory as Sullivan and Moreira held off Tiera Jarmond and Silvia Avakian in a tiebreak to secure a 7-6 victory.
Dalecka would secure her 10th singles win of the year with a 7-5, 6-0 sweep of Jarmond, while Moreira capped an undefeated weekend by rallying for a three-set victory over Alyson Piskulic, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2. Kanyanut Sudsaard would force a third set in the No. 6 single match, but would fall to Avakian, 6-2, 5-7, 6-1.
UP NEXT
UNI returns to the road for their final MVC regular season road trip this year as the Panthers visit conference newcomers Belmont on April 7 at 1 p.m. CT, and Murray State at 10 a.m. on April 8.
