NFL scouts, UNI fans, media observe Panther athletes looking to begin professional football careers.
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa --- Representatives of 17 NFL franchises were on hand inside the UNI-Dome on Monday afternoon as UNI football held its annual Pro Day.
Â
"It's an exciting day for all of these guys," said UNI head football coach Mark Farley. "This is the one day you want to be at your best as you try to beat a time, a clock, a vertical and beat another guy's numbers. It's always good to see them all smiling when the day's over, because you just want to know that you did your best."
Â
Ten Panthers ran through NFL combine drills and workouts in front of scouts, media, family and fans.
Â
Second Team All-Missouri Valley Football Conference (MVFC) offensive lineman Erik Sorensen led UNI's 10 participants with 24 reps on the 225-pound bench press, and set a new program record for lineman with a vertical jump of 35 inches.
Â
All-American and First Team All-MVFC defensive back Benny Sapp III recorded a 10-foot, 2-inch broad jump, along with a vertical leap of 35 ½ inches, the best among participating UNI defenders. Sapp, who played in the 2023 Hula Bowl and was selected with the 27th overall pick in February's USFL Draft by the Memphis Showboats, also led the field with a 6.94 second time in the 3-cone drill.
Â
"I'm never going to stop being hungry," said Sapp after his performance for scouts on Monday. "I love this game with a passion. I felt the best about by position drills as being able to show the scouts that while I play safety, I can also play corner.
Â
Wide receiver Quan Hampton clocked a 40-yard dash time of 4.53 seconds, while brothers Deion McShane and Vance McShane both timed out at 4.56 record. Deion also led the Panthers in the shuttle run with a time of 4.25 seconds.
Â
The 2023 NFL Draft will be held April 27-29 at Union Station in Kansas City, Mo.
