UNI hits the pool with intrasquad competition ahead of Oct. 7 season opener
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa --- UNI swimming and diving will kick off the 2022-23 season with the annual Purple and Gold intrasquad meet on Saturday, October 1 at 12 p.m.
The intrasquad will feature the 13-event lineup with 1-meter and 3-meter diving running together as a team event. Additionally, the divers will compete in a 50 freestyle and some swimmers on the 1-meter board.
The Panthers return 26 athletes from last season after graduating four seniors. This Saturday also marks the first collegiate competition for the seven newcomers.
Among those returning is junior Amber Finke, who has six swims in the all-time top five in program history. Finke was also the recipient of the MVC's Elite 17 Award, given to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade-point average competing at the league's championship event.
Senior Taylor Hogan, the reigning MVC Diver of the Year and three-meter conference champion, returns to lead the Panthers on the springboards. Her 3-meter score of 286.35 from last season ranks as the second highest in school history, trailing only current diving coach Bethany Hovland.
Sophomore Olivia Chambers, set the Para American record in the S13 400 meter individual medley at the USA Swimming Futures Championships in July. She is currently a member of the U.S. Paralympic National Team.
UNI finished fifth out of eight teams at the 2022 MVC Championships in Iowa City, with eight different athletes qualifying for the A-final. The Panthers will once again host the MVC Championships at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center in Iowa City, Feb. 15-18.
The 2022-23 year will mark the 25th season that the Panthers will compete with the Glen F. Henry pool as their home venue. UNI opens the regular season on Oct. 7 hosting Iowa at 5 p.m., the first time the Hawkeyes have visited Cedar Falls since February 2012.
Following the intrasquad competition, the team will hold a moment of silence in honor of former Panther swimmer Lily Ernst, who passed away this past July.
