UNI libero picks up first career MVC honor, second defensive conference honor of career
ST. LOUIS --- UNI libero Sydney Petersen has been named the Missouri Valley Conference's (MVC) Defensive Player of the Week, as announced by the league on Monday afternoon.
The selection marks Petersen's first career honor from the MVC. Petersen previously earned a Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week nod on Sept. 16, 2019 while playing at the University of Texas.
Named the defensive MVP of the Hawkeye Invitational last weekend, Petersen led the Panthers with 62 total digs in four matches this week, averaging 4.43 digs per set in wins over Iowa State, North Florida and South Dakota State. Petersen recorded a season-high 23 digs against South Dakota State, 2 shy of tying her career-best, while also notching a pair of service aces this past week, giving her 95 in her college career. Entering the first week of the MVC schedule, Petersen ranks 5th in the league in total digs this season with 150.
Middle hitter Mallory Januski of Valparaiso was also named the MVC's Player of the Week on Monday, while outside hitter Federica Nuccio of Murray State was selected as the recipient of the league's Freshman of the Week honor.
UNI returns to action on Friday, Sept. 23 at 6 p.m. CT as the Panthers visit Valparaiso to open MVC play. The Panthers will also visit UIC on Saturday, Sept. 24 at 5 p.m. CT, taking on the UIC Flames in Chicago.
