
Panther volleyball sweeps CSU Bakersfield for first win of 2022

UNI takes 3rd at the inaugural Webb-Burbridge Classic with a 1-2 record; Rotto named to All-Tournament Team
TEMPE, Ariz. --- UNI volleyball's offense clicked from start to finish as the Panthers picked up their first win of the season against CSU Bakersfield in a 3-0 victory (25-16, 25-19, 25-20) on Saturday afternoon in the final match of the Webb-Burbridge Classic on the Arizona State University campus. With a 1-2 record on the opening weekend of the season, UNI took 3rd place of the 4 teams competing at Desert Financial Arena.
Emily Holterhaus led the Panthers with 12 kills in the UNI win, with Inga Rotto posting 9 kills. Carly Spies notched 7 kills, 4 total blocks and a career-high 3 service aces, as Tayler Alden led with 35 assists and Sydney Petersen notched 9 digs on defense.
Rotto also received special recognition as she was selected as one of 6 athletes selected to the All-Tournament Team.
2022 Webb-Burbridge Classic All-Tournament Team
Set 1 (UNI, 25-16): UNI jumped out to a quick lead in the opening set, scoring its first 9 points on kills. With a team hitting percentage of .459 with only 2 attack errors, the Panthers took advantage of holes in the Roadrunner defense for an impressive 9-point win to begin the match. Holterhaus posted 5 kills for UNI in the opening frame, while Spies and Kira Fallert both notch 4 kills.
Set 2 (UNI, 25-19): The excellent offensive effort by the Panthers continued into the second set as UNI played another stanza with limited errors with just 3 attack errors. After CSU Bakersfield tied the set at 17 all, the Panthers closed on an 8-2 run with a pair of service aces from Fallert and Payton Ahrenstorff. UNI notched 14 kills with a .393 hit percentage as it took a 2-0 lead into the third.
Set 3 (UNI, 25-20): The Roadrunners took a short lead to begin the third set, but UNI quickly took control and didn't look back. Spies notch consecutive service aces to give the Panthers an 8-5 lead as the CSU Bakersfield offense struggled, committing 6 attack errors hitting only .097 percent on offense. UNI closed strong with kills by Rotto and Holterhaus late to complete the three-set sweep.
