BOSTON --- UNI men's basketball guard AJ Green has been named a finalist for the 2022 Lou Henson National Player of the Year Award, as announced by CollegeInsider.com on Monday afternoon.
The award is presented annually to the top mid-major player in Division I college basketball, and is named after Coach Lou Henson who won 775 career games over a 41-year career at Illinois and New Mexico State.
Players on teams from the following conferences are eligible for the award: America East, Atlantic Sun, Big Sky, Big South, Big West, Colonial, Horizon, Ivy, Metro Atlantic, Mid-American, Mid-Eastern, Missouri Valley, Northeast, Ohio Valley, Patriot, Southern, Southland, Southwestern, Summit, Sun Belt, West Coast.
Green led the Panthers with a team-high 18.8 points per game this past season, helping lead UNI to an outright MVC regular season championship and an appearance in the National Invitation Tournament (NIT). The Cedar Falls, Iowa native, who was named the MVC's Player of the Year for the second time in the last three seasons, is one of 40 finalists from around the nation, including one of two from the MVC, joining Missouri State's Isaiah Mosley.
Green was also selected First Team All-MVC and the league's Co-Scholar Athlete of the Year while averaging a team-high 36 minutes per game. In his third full season of action for UNI, Green improved to fourth all-time on UNI's career scoring list with 1,769 points, and second in career three-point field goals made (266). Green also posted one of the best free throw percentages in the nation, shooting 91.5% from the foul line to lead the MVC and rank in the top 10 in the NCAA. Green's career free throw percentage of 90% ranks first in UNI history, as does his record for consecutive made free throws (48), a mark he set this past season.
The winner of the Lou Henson Award will be announced on Friday, April 1 at the NCAA Final Four in New Orleans, La.
