CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – UNI football players attracted scouts from every NFL team to the UNI-Dome for the Panthers' annual Pro Day.
"It's a big day for all of them, and we were just small part of it the last five years," said head football coach Mark Farley. "Then to see them go out there and perform, it's just a really great experience to be a part of and to witness."
Nine Panthers ran through NFL combine drills and workouts in front of scouts, media, family and fans.
"Bradrick Shaw had a great day," said Farley. "Bradrick did all his training here, and he really changed himself. You see Austin Evans, who has been here the whole time. It was his day to show, and he showed up."
Having competed and posting top marks at the NFL Combine, Trevor Penning and Isaiah Weston were a large part of the draw for NFL scouts.
Penning is expected to be a first-round draft pick, which will be the first for any Panther. He was the only offensive lineman to be named a finalist for the Walter Payton Award and earned a spot on nine All-America teams. His showing at the Reese's Senior Bowl garnered national attention.
"The amount of work put in over the years it helped me tremendously," said Penning. "That's why I am where I am at right now, because of all that work Jed Smith did with us, Coach Farley, Coach Clanton, all the coaches. All that translated on the field today and my whole career.
Weston finished his college career at the top of the FCS leaderboard for most yards per reception. He also had the opportunity to compete in the Hula Bowl and NFLPA Bowl.
"It doesn't matter where you are from, small school, DI, DII, DII," said Weston. "It doesn't matter where you start, it's where you finish. We can play with those guys."
Jared Brinkman, the two-time Missouri Valley Defensive Player of the Year, also returned for a chance to perform for scouts.
"They have spent their lifetime for this day," said Farley. "They have spent four or five years for lifting and training for these two hours of testing. Everything is on the line. It's what we are prepared for – is the opportunity individually to get a chance to go to the NFL. the It's a little kid's dream. It's a college guy's dream. And in the last two hours, they were putting it all on the line to make it happen."
