Panther Track and Field runs to Wisconsin for pre-conference championship tune-ups

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - The UNI Track and Field teams head to Madison, Wisconsin, to make final tune-ups before the Missouri Valley Indoor Conference Championships.Â
The regionally ranked ninth Panthers will be competing in the Badger St. Valentine's Invitational hosted by the University of Wisconsin. Competition is set to begin at 2 p.m in the field with all women's events beginning first. With running events beginning at 5 p.m. in the 60-meter hurdles and 60-meter dash preliminary rounds.Â
Darius King earned MVC honors this past week for his win in the men's shot put and weight throw as he set season bests in both. King took first in the shot put with a toss of 19.67 meters and threw a mark of 19.07 meters in the weight throw. King currently holds first place in the shot put and seventh in the weight throw in the Missouri Valley Conference. King also currently sits 12th in the NCAA in the men's shot put.Â
The Panthers also received two honorable mentions for athletes of the week by Jack Sumners and Mari Shavers for their work at the Iowa State Classic. Sumners earned runner-up in the 60-meter hurdles with a second season's best time of 8.07 seconds. Shavers set personal bests in the women's weight throw and shot put. She posted distances of 18.81 meters in the weight throw and 13.54 meters in the shot put.Â
Freshman standout Paishence Johnson is one to keep an eye on after posting a personal best time in the 60-meter dash at the Wartburg Friday Knight Lights meet with a time of 7.55 seconds. Johnson claimed championship status last week at the Iowa State Classic in the 60-meter-dash with the time of 7.60 seconds.Â
Matteo Capello also continues his lead over the Missouri Valley in the men's pole vault with his season best jump of 5.36 meters set at the Husker Invitational. Capello also ties for 18th in the NCAA with this mark, sitting on the cusp of national qualifications for the Division 1 indoor championships in March.Â
